Live in the Light

Wipeable high chair, coverall bib, suction bowl and spill proof cup, I thought I was all geared up for my Granny Thursday. Lunch was a big success and we headed off for afternoon tea with my friends. No sooner had I left the house than looking down I realised I had soup dribbled down my front! I hadn’t noticed it inside the house, but alas, daylight revealed all!

This is one of the effects of aging; I seem to need a brighter light to see details, read a label or thread a needle, not to mention notice stains on my clothes.

Getting Older

Spiritually too I need more light. Lifetime habits, patterns of relating and behaving are hard to recognise, far less change, yet I desperately want deeper transformation to serve God better. Looking inside myself doesn’t help. Only Jesus, the Light of the World, knows me in depth and can bring a lasting growth in Christlikeness. Otherwise, I fear as I age I may become a caricature of myself with all the foibles magnified instead of sanctified.

When Jesus challenged those wanting to stone the woman caught in adultery concerning their personal sinfulness, it’s interesting that it was the older folk who walked away first (John 8:7). Perhaps in the presence of Christ’s light, they became aware of their many years of sin. Yes, as Tim Keller says, ‘We are more sinful than we realise, but more loved than we can imagine.’

Light and Life

Light is essential for living. We are so dependent on the sun for life to thrive. Jesus promises abundant life to those who walk with him in his light. As I allow him to search me, his grace, mercy and love become all the sweeter.

‘With you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light’ (Psalm 36:9).

And on Thursdays I will wear an apron when I feed little Luka.
