God at the Wheel

Today would be my dad’s birthday and I’ve been thinking warm thoughts, remembering growing up in Kirkcaldy and our family visits to Kirkcaldy’s famous funfair. The Links Market is still Europe’s longest street fair, stretching a mile along the esplanade. It’s also the oldest in Scotland, having been established in 1304! This annual six-day event attracts between 200,000 and 300,000 visitors to the town.

I was prone to travel sickness, so didn’t enjoy the rides – I couldn’t even watch the Waltzers without feeling nauseous. The Gallopers were fun with Dad. Although they went round in a circle, it was a big circle and they didn’t go fast. I loved the atmosphere, the happy crowds, the colourful stalls, the music and, of course, the smells of chips, candy floss and sawdust. My dad had a good eye and could easily win a goldfish for me at Hoopla.

Dodgem Cars

One ride I did like as a child was the Dodgems, or Bumper Cars. I remember the safe excitement of being in a car with my dad. He was so clever at dodging the bumps. With his right hand on the steering wheel and his left arm protectively round my shoulders, any bump that did come our way only made me laugh.

The Links Market week was in April and often coincided with the Easter holidays. It was a great place to hang out as teenagers, so when I was older I took a travel sickness tablet and went with my friends from school. One evening when I was about 14, three of us each climbed into the Dodgem Cars. To my horror there were older boys on the track whose sole aim was to bump me as often and as hard as possible. My face showed how scared I was which made them bump me all the more. I was so glad when the music stopped and I could get out.

God at the Wheel

I’ve often reflected on this as I’ve experienced the twists and turns of life and the inevitable bumps along the way. How good to know my Father God is in the driving seat, well able to dodge the enemy. Only bumps he allows can come my way. His arm is around me and I’m safe with him. I’m not alone, so I can bravely step out, embrace life and enjoy the ride.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6).
